But I Like It!

Según se dice, por el malestar que les causó dejar plantados a los niños de un albergue infantil en la ciudad de Imst, en Austria, en una visita programada la mañana siguiente a un concierto efectuado en Viena el 30.May.99 (al cual los integrantes de los Rolling Stones no llegaron por haberse dedicado severamente a tonear, como correspondía), Mick Jagger y Keith Richards decidieron hacer un cover de uno de sus temas más representativos con el exclusivo fin de dedicar lo recaudado por las ventas a fines benéficos. Así, hacia Octubre del mismo año - a puertas de celebrarse la llegada del 2000- y contando con el concurso de unos treinta y cinco importantes músicos y cantantes, los Stones grabaron para la organización de ayuda a la niñez desvalida Children's Promise la canción "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)".

Bajo la dirección del director británico Edward Rinkoff, el clip que acompañó al lanzamiento del CD doble (single presentado en cuatro mezclas, Universal Music TV 156.601.2, 1999) es un raro cameo en el que se dejan ver leyendas de la música popular como Chrissie Hynde, Ozzy Osbourne, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, James Brown y músicos de la talla de Herbie Hancock y Ray Barreto, compartiendo escenarios con íconos del rock y el pop (Annie Lennox, Jamiroquai, Lionel Richie, las Spice Girls y Jon Bon Jovi, entre muchos otros), incluso junto a dos extraordinarios actores cómicos (Robin Williams y el británico Eric Idle). El single llegó hasta el puesto 19 del chart británico, fue difundido como uno de los temas de la BBC TV para conmemorar ese especial fin de año y se estima recaudó medio millón de libras esterlinas (sin contar, por supuesto, la contribución que significará que el autor de esta columna se anime, finalmente, a pedirlo a través de Amazon).

Vi este clip por primera vez en 2001 en la fenecida cadena musical de cable argentina Mu21c, y cuento la canción entre mis all time favorites.
